Interesting point. A topic well worth thinking about: the degree to which Religion (or religions) are human constructs, and the degree to which our moral behavior is constructed by those things (like religion) that exist to at least partly assist us in making "good" moral choices.

It's people who decide what their religions are, not religions decide what people are and make people fight. Secure

I do not believe that selfishness is an inherent trait.

I think both religion and history contradict this to some extent. Certainly, all animals act in a self-interested manner...man has a choice, put some of the pulls to self-interest are the same...

Thanks for the comment! My point remains true. We are all looking for someone to blame for this. And, I wonder what is underneath this issue? Where did the selfishness (of the stampeders, of the retailers, of the media, of... [fill in the blank] come from? Where is its birthplace? Or, if we accept that selfishness is a primary inherent motivator in all behavior, then where are people to learn to moderate that selfishness? Or are they to learn to moderate selfishness? For the record, I do not believe that selfishness is an inherent trait. There may be an inbred need to protect oneself and look out for oneself, but the need to sastify one's perceived needs at the cost of other's life and safety... that is something else.

The Kvetcher was being sarcastic, and denouncing the Times for blaming the media and the retailers instead of the selfish idiots who stampeded.
